Growing Our Brains!

We learn a lot in second grade!

Writing ~ We have been responding to reading using our ReadyGen curriculum.  Students are focusing on narrative writing.  They are writing bold beginnings, excellent endings, and including all story elements.

Literacy ~ Students are learning how to read closely and use evidence from the text to prove their answers.

Math ~ Students will be studying arrays and finding the repeated addition sentences to match each array.  They will also begin to see a multiplication connection. Students are also working on three-digit addition and subtraction.  Lastly, they are studying data in bar graphs and pictographs.

Social Studies ~ Students are studying maps.  They are learning about the importance of a map title, compass rose, and may key.

Science ~ Students are learning about the world around them.  They are learning about different habitats and how animals and plants live in these habitats.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) involves the processes through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Morning Meeting

Greeting:  Students choose from the "Morning Meeting Umbrella" to determine which "greeting" will be done.  The choices include "handshake," "choice," and "walk & switch."  Each greeting allows students to greet one another and be greeted.  The greeting practices hospitality and models the importance of saying "hello" to one another.

Share:  Students choose from the "Morning Meeting Umbrella" to determine which "share" will be given.  The choices include "lightning" and "3 shares."  Students are able to share important information about their lives.  Listeners then offer empathetic questions or comments.  The share allows students a forum to have a conversation about events, likes/dislikes, or anything they want to discuss.

Activity:  Students choose from the "Morning Meeting Umbrella" to determine which "activity" will be played.  The choices include "heads up, 7 up," "elf, elf, there's an elf on my shelf," "doggie, doggie where's my bone," "leader," four corners," "silent ball," "category," and "two truths & one lie."  During the activity, students have the opportunity to play a lively and engaging game that fosters group cohesion and helps students practice their social skills.

Message:  Students choose from the "Morning Meeting Umbrella" to determine the reader of the message.  The choices include "boys," "girls," and "choral."  If "boys" or "girls" are chosen, the other gender group says "thank you" to the readers.  The message is crafted to review work that has been done previously or to preview the day.  It is an opportunity for students to read a letter from their teacher.

Closing Circle

Students choose from the "Closing Circle Pocket" to determine which topic will be discussed.  The topics include, "favorite part of the day," "how someone was kind to you," and "an anything."
